5083 5383 Aluminum Sheet for Boat Building

Since 1891, aluminum alloys have been used in the shipbuilding industry for nearly a hundred years. With the rapid development of the shipbuilding industry at home and abroad, the lightweight of ships is increasingly valued. Due to its low density, high strength and strong corrosion resistance, aluminum is very suitable for the harsh environment of the ocean.

In order to continuously improve the comprehensive performance of 5000 series marine aluminum alloys, many tempers like H116, H321, H323, etc. through deformation heat treatment processes on the basis of traditional alloys such as 5456, 5083, and 5086 have been developed. On the other hand, new 5-series aluminum alloys are constantly being developed by optimizing alloy compositions, such as 5383 aluminum registered in 1995 and 5059 aluminum alloy registered in 1999.

5083 aluminum plate belongs to the Al-Mg series aluminum alloy. It has the highest tensile strength and good weldability among all non-heat-treated strengthened aluminum alloys. It is also extremely resistant to seawater corrosion and is recognized as the best marine aluminum alloy for boat building.

The activation ring of 5083 aluminum alloy in seawater is small and it is easy to return to the passive state. At the same time, the breakdown potential and protection potential are higher than the self-corrosion potential in the stable state, which reflects its good corrosion resistance in seawater. Pitting corrosion is also the main corrosion form of 5083 aluminum alloy.

In the ship design industry, 5083 H116/H321/H112 tempers are often used. 5083H111 and 5083H112 themselves belong to the same 5083 aluminum alloy. They are essentially the same and have no difference in chemical composition. 5083 h34 is not often used for shipbuilding.

5383 aluminum alloy has increased corrosion resistance and 10% increase in impact strength. At the same time, its processing characteristics such as forming, folding, shearing, and welding are almost the same as those of 5083. This makes 5383 alloy more useful in building larger and faster ships.

As the annealing temperature increases and the cold rolling processing rate decreases, the spalling corrosion resistance of cold-rolled 5383 aluminum alloy increases. 5383 aluminum alloy has high strength and good corrosion resistance after cold rolling with a processing rate of 30%~45% and annealing at 225℃~250℃ and holding for 3 hours.
