Development history of aluminium marine sheet

The development of marine aluminum plates has a history of more than one hundred years. From the first small boat in 1891 to today's 10,000-ton-class ship, aluminum alloys have been used more and more widely in the field of shipbuilding.

In 1891, the Swiss company Eocher Wyss built an all-aluminum motorboat on the lake for the first time, which could carry 8 people. In 1892, France built a 12.2 meter long all-aluminum motorboat on the sea. However, due to the limitation of the corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys, the development of aluminium marine sheets was very slow at that time.

In the 1930s, 6061-T6 aluminum plate was used in shipbuilding, and the hull was constructed by riveting. Later in the 1940s, weldable and corrosion-resistant aluminum-magnesium alloys were developed. TIG welding technology was adopted in the 1950s. It was not until the 1960s when significant development was made in marine aluminium alloy development. The U.S. Navy solve the spalling urban and intergranular corrosion problems and developed 5086-H32, 5456-H321 marine aluminum sheets by eliminating the intergranular precipitation net film.

From the 1970s to the 1980s, more and more attention was paid to the rationalization and lightweight of ship structures, and the development of marine aluminium sheet plates accelerated. In 1970, a large Japanese ship used aluminum plates for its outer plates, decks, and partitions. This marked the beginning of aluminum plate application in large ships and high-speed ships. Subsequently, aluminum plate replaced glass and became the main material for building fishing boats. Aluminum alloy fishing boats have taken the ocean by storm for a while. It is worth mentioning that several 120,000 cubic meters of large-scale LNG ships were also made of aluminum alloy, which had started the boom of large-scale aluminum alloy ships.

Since the 1980s, small and heavy aluminum alloy yachts, passenger ships and high-speed ships have developed rapidly, and the application cases of marine aluminum sheets are beyond listing.
